Thin section of the Drelów meteorite (L6)
Meteorite Drelów
The Drelów meteorite was an observed fall in Poland on February 18, 2025. A total of 75 stones/fragments were recovered, with a total known weight (TKW) of 4 kg. It is classified as an ordinary chondrite, type L6, shock stage S3, weathering level W0.
According to the publication by Szopa et al. (2025), the Drelów meteorite contains:
- olivine 37% vol (forsterite 73.35% mol, fayalite 25.94% mol)
- pyroxene 54% vol (enstatite 76.34% mol, ferrosilite 22.00% mol, wollastonite 1.65% mol)
- feldspar 3% vol (plagioclase: Albite 83.91 Ortoclase 5.78, Anortite 10.31, Cs 0.03)
- Fe-Ni metal 3.5% vol (nickel: 3.1 to 6.32% weight in kamacite)
- troilite 2% vol
This thin section, prepared from a 0.75 g slice of a 14 g meteorite found by Olek Błasiak on March 4, 2025, is owned by Szymon Kozłowski and was scanned on August 21, 2025, using a Keyence VHX-7000 polarizing microscope in both plane- and cross-polarized modes at the Department of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Petrology, University of Warsaw, Poland.
